In a recent blog post, Jennifer Marks, Head of Digital Sustainability at the Government Digital Service (GDS), shared some interesting updates about the GOV.UK One Login team’s efforts to enhance digital sustainability.
After establishing a baseline for carbon emissions, the team partnered with Greenpixie to analyze cloud emissions using AWS data. Despite an initial rise in emissions due to onboarding more services, optimisations saved about 40 tonnes of CO₂e per month from February to June 2024.

The team developed dashboards to monitor changes at a system or team level, allowing them to identify and address any increases in emissions early. These dashboards show emissions against cost, showing that sustainable decisions benefit the planet and save money.

This highlights the dual advantages of sustainable practices: environmental responsibility and cost savings.
The One Login team is now working to demonstrate these benefits, involving major improvements across the entire team.
Jennifer’s blog post is an inspiring call to action for other organisations to assess their digital services to reduce their environmental impact.
